The “shame” in the title feels less like moral condemnation and more like a private ache Jane carries through ordinary scenes: half-empty apartments, late-night phone screens, the hum of fluorescent kitchens. The narrator watches her with equal parts empathy and exasperation, and the song’s voice never quite chooses whether to rescue or to leave her to herself — which is what makes it honest.
