Ryland soon learns that he is part of a top-secret project to communicate with an alien spacecraft that has been detected near Proxima b. The aliens, who are dubbed "the Architects", have been sending out probes to explore the galaxy, and the Hail Mary mission is an attempt to establish contact with them.
