The series begins with Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller), a brilliant engineer who gets tattooed with a prison map on his body to break out his brother Lincoln Burrows (played by Dominic Purcell) from Fox River State Penitentiary. Lincoln is wrongly convicted of murdering the Vice President's brother and is on death row. Michael gets himself incarcerated in Fox River to execute the escape plan.
