Narratively, the film’s reverse chronology is its cruelest trick. By revealing effects before causes, Noé forces us to reassess sympathy and culpability. When we finally arrive at the earliest scenes—sunlit, tender, ordinary—we see how small choices and random cruelties conspired toward catastrophe.
