The film takes place during the Bosnian War. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Burnett (Owen Wilson) is a U.S. Air Force pilot on a reconnaissance mission when his plane is shot down. He manages to escape and finds himself in the midst of a hostile environment. With the help of a local Croatian farmer, Burnett tries to evade capture by the Bosnian Serb Army, led by the ruthless General Haperin (Javier Bardem).
