The film tells the story of Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan), a charming and successful businessman who falls in love with Simran Singh (Kajol), a beautiful and free-spirited young woman. However, their love is put to the test when they face opposition from Simran's strict father, Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), who has promised her hand in marriage to another man.
